What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT aims to help you to make links between your thoughts, feelings and behaviour and then to challenge parts of your thinking and behaviour that keeps your problems going. CBT generally focuses on the ‘here and now’ whilst exploring your past will provide you with an understanding of how is affecting you now, however the past will not be the focus of the therapy.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, time limited and goal oriented therapy. The theory states that people experience mental health problems because of the way they think, feel and behave. According to the theory people tend to see situations or circumstances in a negative way. Seeing things in a negative way is likely to result in the experience of negative emotions such as sadness, anger or guilt. When our emotions are guiding mood and thinking, we are likely to engage in negative behaviours and therefore experience negative consequences.
