What is CFT & What Can It Offer?

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is part of a third wave of CBT and was developed by Professor Paul Gilbert to work with people who’s problems have developed or are maintained through self-criticism and/or feelings of shame, which may cause them to experience emotional difficulties; including low mood and/or anxiety and who may struggle to feel reassured or safe.

CFT aims to help individuals develop feelings of contentment, safety and connection, helping them gain emotional balance and well being and overcome long standing negative self-beliefs, or help to address difficulties experienced by those who have had a traumatic upbringing and feel held back by their past.

If you have self-esteem problems, tend to be critical of yourself and think this is holding you back in life, or leading to depression and/or anxiety then CFT may be of help to you

CFT helps increase awareness and understanding of our habitual automatic reactions, that we all experience, that have been learned from childhood and that have evolved in humans over millions of years.

CFT helps people acknowledge their early background influences (e.g. maybe neglect and abuse) and how that has shaped their fears and concerns which may be based around the need for secure attachment and affection. Childhood or adolescent experiences of neglect and/or abuse can lead to the development of behaviours or safety strategies; social avoidance, being excessively submissive and people pleasing, or showing aggressive self promotion.

These ways of being have developed to help the individual feel safe and protected however they can lead to unintended consequences and symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, isolation and emptiness.

CFT helps people to develop insight into the links between their backgrounds, safety strategies and unintended consequences, and then aims to help you develop self-compassion; motivate you to care for your well-being, become sensitive to your needs and distress and extend warmth and understanding towards yourself helping you develop the courage to pursue your goals in life.

As well as reflecting on your experiences, fears and concerns you will learn how to have compassion for yourself and others, developing skills through; compassionate imagery, behaviour, thinking, feeling and attention. These skills help us get in touch with and strengthen compassionate qualities of empathy, sympathy, care for our well being, distress tolerance and non judgment.

Linda has trained in CFT with Professor Paul Gilbert who developed the model and is a member of a Compassion Focused Interest Group.
